What is Muay Thai

Muay Thai is a combat sport from Thailand that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. It is similar to other Indochinese styles, namely pradal serey from Cambodia, tomoi from Malaysia, lethwei from Myanmar and Muay Lao from Laos. Descended from muay boran, Muay Thai is Thailands national sport. The word Muay derives from Sanskrit mavya. Muay Thai is referred to as the "Art of Eight Limbs" or the "Science of Eight Limbs" because it makes use of punches, kicks, elbows and knee strikes, thus using eight "Points of contact", as opposed to "two points" (fists) in boxing and "Four points" (hands and feet) used in sport-oriented martial arts. A practitionaer of Muay Thai is known as a nak muay. Western practitioners are sometimes called nak muay farang meaning foreing boxer.

"Kru Steven's knowledge of Muay Thai greatly exceeded my expectations. I learned during class that he is actually 'a trainer of trainers' and it shows. He breaks down each punch, kick and defensive maneuver into it's smallest component so that even a beginner like me can easily understand. The way he describes each technique is like a second language to him. His patience with each student is one trait that I respect tremendously. I'm amazed at how much progress I've been able to make in only a few months." - Drew Brengel
